The Weight on the Manifest

Days after burying her father, Imani Vale finds a forty-foot container sitting inside her family's Oakland freight yard. No truck brought it in. No gate logged it. Yet Mercy Freight's system says Elias Vale accepted it seventy-three hours after his death.

A controlled inspection turns dangerous. The container opens onto rooms, machinery, records, and injuries from different decades, all carrying the physical weight of stolen labor, displaced families, abandoned risk, and agreements Mercy was never supposed to question. Imani's nephew is marked by the breach. Her workers are placed in danger. The company begins to fail around them.

As Imani traces the shipment, she is forced to work beside Mateo Ruiz, an investigator paid by Mercy's insurer. Their competence draws them together; his withheld loyalties make trust, desire, and consent harder than attraction.

Saving Mercy cannot mean handing its inherited debt to another innocent family. Imani must uncover what her parents accepted, bring living workers and residents into the truth, and decide what repair costs when confession is not payment.
